    How It Is Calculated

    This calculator determines three key values for your motorcycle: the gear ratio, the theoretical top speed, and the required chain length. Each is computed using standard mechanical formulas.

    Gear Ratio

    The gear ratio is the ratio of rear sprocket teeth to front sprocket teeth. It tells you how many times the rear sprocket turns for each turn of the front sprocket.

    Gear Ratio = R / F

    Where R = rear sprocket teeth and F = front sprocket teeth. The result is expressed as X:1.

    Speed (mph)

    The theoretical top speed is based on engine RPM, tire diameter, and the gear ratio. It assumes no losses.

    Speed = (E × π × D) / (G × 1056)

    Where E = engine RPM, D = tire diameter in inches, G = gear ratio, and π = 3.141592653589793. The constant 1056 converts inches per minute to miles per hour.

    Chain Length (links)

    Chain length is calculated using an approximation that accounts for sprocket sizes and center distance. The chain pitch is assumed to be 0.625 inches (standard for most motorcycle chains).

    Lp = (2 × C) / P + (R + F) / 2 + ((R - F)2 × P) / (4 × C × π2)

    Where C = center distance in inches, P = chain pitch (0.625 in), R = rear sprocket teeth, F = front sprocket teeth, and π = 3.141592653589793. The result Lp is in pitches. Round Lp up to the nearest whole number, then add the extra links to get the total chain length in links.

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

    Let's use the following inputs: Front sprocket teeth = 15, Rear sprocket teeth = 45, Center distance = 25 in, Tire diameter = 24 in, Engine RPM = 6000, Extra links = 2.

    1. Gear Ratio: 45 / 15 = 3.00, so the gear ratio is 3:1.
    2. Speed: (6000 × 3.141592653589793 × 24) / (3 × 1056) ≈ 142.8 mph.
    3. Chain Length: First, Lp = (2 × 25) / 0.625 + (45 + 15) / 2 + ((45 - 15)2 × 0.625) / (4 × 25 × 3.1415926535897932) ≈ 80 + 30 + 0.912 ≈ 110.912 pitches. Round up to 111 pitches. Since 1 pitch = 1 link, add 2 extra links: 111 + 2 = 113 links.

    Thus, the results are: Gear Ratio = 3:1, Speed = 142.8 mph, Chain Length = 113 links.

    Questions and answers

    What is the standard chain pitch for motorcycles?

    Most motorcycle chains use a pitch of 0.625 inches (5/8 inch), which is standard for sizes 520, 525, and 530.

    Why does the chain length formula round up?

    Chain length is rounded up to the nearest whole link because chains are sold in whole links, and you need a full link to connect the ends.

    Can I use this calculator for a bicycle?

    No, this calculator is designed for motorcycles with a chain pitch of 0.625 inches. For bicycles, use the Bicycle Gear Ratio Calculator instead.

    How accurate is the speed calculation?

    The speed calculation is theoretical and assumes no tire slip or losses. Actual speed may be slightly lower due to friction, air resistance, and other factors.
