Engineering calculators that show their working
Free calculators for plant, process and site work. Every result comes with the formula, the standard it follows and the assumptions behind it. No sign-up.
Shipping and logistics
- CBM and chargeable weight calculatorEnter the size and weight of one package and the number of packages. The calculator gives the total CBM and the weight the carrier will charge.
- Freight class calculatorMeasure the outside of each pallet or crate, including the pallet itself, and enter its weight. The calculator works out the density and the matching freight class.
- Pallet calculatorChoose the pallet, enter the carton size and weight, and set the maximum load height and weight. The calculator finds the best layer pattern, including mixed orientations.
- Dimensional weight calculatorPick the carrier rate, enter the box size and its actual weight. The calculator rounds like the carrier does and shows which weight you will be billed for.
- Chargeable weight calculatorEnter the size, number and weight of the pieces. If your shipment has two different carton or pallet sizes, use the second line. The calculator compares gross and volumetric weight and shows what the airline will charge.
- Loading meter calculatorEnter the pallet size, the number of pallets and how high they can be stacked. The calculator gives the loading metres and what the haulier may charge.
- Container loading calculatorEnter the outer size and weight of one box and pick the container. The calculator finds the best orientation and checks the weight limit.
Electrical
- Voltage drop calculatorPick the supply, then enter the current, the one-way length and the wire size. The calculator shows the voltage drop, the voltage at the load and the power lost in the wire.
- Cable size calculatorEnter the supply, the current and the one-way length. The calculator picks the smallest standard size that carries the current and keeps the voltage drop within your limit.
- Three-phase power calculatorChoose what you want to find, then enter the line-to-line voltage and either the current or the power. The calculator gives real, apparent and reactive power and the line current.
- Transformer sizing calculatorEnter the load either as power or as current, add a margin for growth, and pick the standard. The calculator gives the required kVA, the next standard transformer size and how heavily it will be loaded.
- Power factor correction calculatorEnter the real power of the load, the present and the target power factor, voltage and frequency. The calculator gives the kVAR of capacitors to add and what that does to current and kVA.
Steel, materials and bulk handling
- Steel weight calculatorPick the shape and material, then enter the section dimensions A and B as shown in the drawing and the length. The calculator gives the weight per piece, per meter or foot and in total.
- Bulk material weight and volume calculatorPick a material or enter your own bulk density. The calculator gives the weight of a volume and the volume of a weight.
- Bucket elevator capacity calculatorEnter the bucket size, how far apart the buckets sit and the belt speed. The calculator gives the throughput.
- Conveyor belt capacity calculatorEnter your belt and material. The calculator works out the load cross-section on a three-roll troughed belt and turns it into volume and mass flow.
- Screw conveyor capacity calculatorEnter the screw dimensions, speed and how full the trough runs. The calculator gives volume and mass flow, corrected for incline.
- Silo capacity calculatorEnter the silo dimensions and the bulk density of the stored material. The calculator gives the hopper height, the volume and the capacity in tonnes.
- Stockpile volume and tonnage calculatorEnter the base width of the pile, the length of any straight section and the angle of repose. The calculator gives height, volume and tonnage.
Pumps, pipes and heat transfer
- Pipe pressure drop calculatorEnter flow, pipe size and length and choose the material and fluid. The calculator gives the friction loss in bar and metres of head.
- Pipe flow velocity calculatorEnter the flow rate and the inner diameter. The calculator gives the velocity and the diameter needed for your target velocity.
- Pump head calculator (total dynamic head)Enter the flow, the pipe and the height the liquid has to be lifted. The calculator adds static head, pressure head and friction loss to the total dynamic head (TDH) you need from the pump.
- Tank volume calculator with fill levelChoose the tank orientation and enter diameter, length and the measured fill level. The calculator gives the liquid volume and how full the tank is.
- NPSH calculator (NPSH available)Describe the suction side: the tank, the water temperature, how high the liquid level is above or below the pump, and the friction in the suction pipe. The calculator shows NPSH available and the margin to the pump's NPSH required.
- Pump power calculatorEnter flow, head and the efficiencies. The calculator works out the power the pump needs and suggests a standard motor size.
- Duct size calculatorEnter the airflow and choose how to size: by friction rate, like a duct calculator wheel, or by air velocity. The calculator gives the round duct size, a rectangular equivalent and the velocity and friction at that size.
- Boiler blowdown calculatorEnter the steam output, the dissolved solids in the feedwater and the limit for the boiler water. The calculator gives the blowdown you need and what it costs.
- Compressed air leak cost calculatorEnter the size of the leak, the system pressure and your running hours. The calculator shows what the leak costs you every year.
- Heat exchanger area and LMTD calculatorEnter the inlet and outlet temperatures, the heat duty and the overall heat transfer coefficient. The calculator gives the LMTD and the area you need.
Hydraulics and mechanics
- Hydraulic cylinder force calculatorEnter bore, rod diameter and working pressure. The calculator gives the extending and retracting force of a double-acting cylinder.
- Bolt torque calculatorPick the bolt size, grade and thread condition. The calculator gives the preload at 75% of the proof load and the tightening torque that produces it.
- Motor torque calculatorChoose whether you want the torque or the power, then enter the other two values. Speed is the shaft speed in revolutions per minute.
