    How It Is Calculated

The Transit Time Calculator estimates the total time required for a shipment to travel from origin to destination. The calculation uses two main components: a fixed handling time and a travel time based on the shipping mode's average speed. The formula is:

    Estimated transit time (days) = H + (D / S)

    Where:

The result is rounded to one decimal place. The transit time with a safety buffer is calculated as:

    Transit time with buffer = Estimated transit time × (1 + B / 100)

Where B is the safety buffer percentage. This result is also rounded to one decimal place.

The handling times and speeds for each shipping mode are:

    Shipping modeHandling time (H)Speed (S)
    Ground (UPS/FedEx Ground)1 day400 miles/day
    LTL (Less-than-Truckload)2 days300 miles/day
    Full Truckload1 day500 miles/day
    Express (DHL/FedEx Express)0.5 days600 miles/day
    Ocean (Port-to-Port)5 days20 miles/day

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

Suppose you have a shipment with a distance of 500 miles, using Ground mode (handling time = 1 day, speed = 400 miles/day), and a safety buffer of 10%.

First, calculate the estimated transit time:

    Estimated transit time = 1 + (500 / 400) = 1 + 1.25 = 2.25 days

Rounded to one decimal place: 2.3 days.

    Next, apply the safety buffer:

    Transit time with buffer = 2.25 × (1 + 10/100) = 2.25 × 1.10 = 2.475 days

Rounded to one decimal place: 2.5 days.

Thus, the estimated transit time is 2.3 days, and with a 10% buffer, it becomes 2.5 days.

    Practical Tips

    Questions and answers

Why does the calculator show 2.3 days but my carrier says 3 days?

The calculator provides an estimate based on average speeds and handling times. Actual carrier schedules, pickup days, and service commitments may differ, so always confirm with your carrier.

Does the safety buffer guarantee on-time delivery?

No, the safety buffer is a planning tool to account for typical delays. It does not guarantee delivery by that date, as unforeseen events can still cause longer delays.

Can I use this calculator for international shipments?

Yes, but only for ocean port-to-port or express air. For other modes, the calculator assumes domestic distances and may not reflect customs or border delays.

Why is the ocean mode so slow?

Ocean freight has a low average speed (20 miles per day) because it includes port handling, waiting times, and slow vessel speeds. This is typical for port-to-port transit.
