Weight concrete calculator

Measure the length, width, and thickness of your concrete slab in feet and inches. Enter the dimensions and concrete density to calculate the total weight.

ft

Length of the slab in feet.

ft

Width of the slab in feet.

in

Thickness of the slab in inches.

lb/ft³

Typical concrete is 150 lb/ft³. Lightweight concrete may be 100-120, heavy 180-200.

    How It Is Calculated

    The weight of a concrete slab is found by first computing its volume and then multiplying by the density of concrete. The steps are:

    1. Convert the thickness from inches to feet: t = thickness / 12.
    2. Calculate the volume in cubic feet: V = length × width × t.
    3. Apply the safety factor: Vs = V × (1 + safety_factor / 100).
    4. Compute the weight in pounds: Wlb = Vs × density.
    5. Convert to tons: Wtons = Wlb / 2000.

    V = L × W × (H / 12)

    Wlb = V × (1 + S / 100) × D

    Wtons = Wlb / 2000

    Where L = length (ft), W = width (ft), H = thickness (in), D = density (lb/ft³), S = safety factor (%).

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

    Using the inputs: Length = 10 ft, Width = 10 ft, Thickness = 4 in, Concrete density = 150 lb/ft³, Safety factor = 0 %.

    1. Thickness in feet: t = 4 / 12 = 0.3333 ft.
    2. Volume: V = 10 × 10 × 0.3333 = 33.33 ft³.
    3. Safety factor 0%: Vs = 33.33 × 1.0 = 33.33 ft³.
    4. Weight in pounds: Wlb = 33.33 × 150 = 5000 lb.
    5. Weight in tons: Wtons = 5000 / 2000 = 2.5 tons.

    Results: Volume = 33.33 ft³, Total weight = 5000 lb, Total weight = 2.5 tons.

    Questions and answers

    Why does the calculator ask for a safety factor?

    The safety factor accounts for variations in concrete density, moisture content, or slight inaccuracies in dimensions. Adding 5–10% ensures you don't underestimate the weight.

    Can I use this calculator for circular or irregular slabs?

    This calculator is designed for rectangular slabs. For circular slabs, calculate the area as π × radius² and then multiply by thickness. For irregular shapes, break them into rectangles and sum the volumes.

    What is the typical density of concrete?

    Standard concrete density is 150 lb/ft³. Lightweight concrete ranges from 100–120 lb/ft³, while heavy concrete can be 180–200 lb/ft³. Adjust the density input accordingly.

    Does the calculator include the weight of rebar or reinforcement?

    No, the calculator only accounts for the concrete itself. Rebar can add roughly 5–10 lb per cubic foot, so you may need to add that separately if needed.
