Concrete driveway cost calculator

Measure the length and width of your driveway in feet, and the thickness in inches. Enter the waste factor and the price per cubic yard of concrete to estimate the volume and total cost.

ft

Length of the driveway.

ft

Width of the driveway.

in

Thickness of the concrete slab.

%

Extra concrete to account for spillage and uneven subgrade.

    How It Is Calculated

    This calculator estimates the concrete volume and cost for a rectangular driveway. The calculation follows these steps:

    1. Convert the thickness from inches to feet: t = thickness / 12.
    2. Calculate the volume in cubic feet: Vft = length × width × t.
    3. Convert to cubic yards: Vyd = Vft / 27.
    4. Apply the waste factor: Vwaste = Vyd × (1 + waste_factor / 100).
    5. Calculate the driveway area: A = length × width.
    6. Calculate the total cost: C = Vwaste × price_per_cy.

    A = L × W

    t = T / 12

    Vft = L × W × t

    Vyd = Vft / 27

    Vwaste = Vyd × (1 + w / 100)

    C = Vwaste × P

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

    For a driveway with length = 30 ft, width = 12 ft, thickness = 4 in, waste factor = 10%, and price per cubic yard = $150:

    1. Area: A = 30 × 12 = 360 ft².
    2. Thickness in feet: t = 4 / 12 = 0.3333 ft.
    3. Volume in cubic feet: Vft = 30 × 12 × 0.3333 = 120 ft³.
    4. Volume in cubic yards: Vyd = 120 / 27 = 4.4444 yd³.
    5. Volume with waste: Vwaste = 4.4444 × (1 + 10/100) = 4.8889 yd³.
    6. Total cost: C = 4.8889 × 150 = $733.33.
    7. Results: Driveway area = 360.00 ft², Concrete volume = 4.89 yd³, Total concrete cost = $733.33.

      Practical Tips

      • Always order a little extra concrete to account for spillage and uneven subgrade—the waste factor covers this.
      • Ensure the subbase is compacted and level before pouring to avoid cracking.
      • Consider using reinforcement like rebar or wire mesh for added strength.
      • For other aspects of your project, you might find the Concrete slab calculator useful for similar slabs, or the Concrete calculator for general concrete volume needs.

    Questions and answers

    How do I measure the length and width of my driveway?

    Measure the longest and widest parts of the driveway using a tape measure. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and measure each separately.

    What is the typical thickness for a concrete driveway?

    A standard residential driveway is usually 4 inches thick. For heavier vehicles, 5 to 6 inches may be recommended.

    Why is a waste factor included?

    The waste factor accounts for concrete lost during mixing, pouring, and spillage, as well as uneven subgrade that may require extra material.

    Does this calculator include labor and other materials?

    No, it only estimates the cost of the concrete itself. Labor, reinforcement, subbase, and finishing are separate expenses.
