    How It Is Calculated

This calculator helps you estimate the amount of flooring material needed for a rectangular room and the total cost. The calculations follow these steps:

    1. Room area: Multiply the room length by the room width.
    2. Waste area: Multiply the room area by the waste factor (as a percentage) and divide by 100.
    3. Total area needed: Add the waste area to the room area.
    4. Total material cost: Multiply the total area needed by the cost per square foot.

    Room area = L × W

    Waste area = Room area × (F / 100)

Total area needed = Room area + Waste area

Total material cost = Total area needed × C

Where L is the room length in feet, W is the room width in feet, F is the waste factor in percent, and C is the cost per square foot in dollars.

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

Suppose you have a room that is 10 ft long and 10 ft wide, a waste factor of 10%, and a cost per square foot of $3.00.

These results match the example outputs.

    Questions and answers

How do I measure a room that is not a perfect rectangle?

Break the room into smaller rectangles, measure each, and add their areas. For irregular shapes, use a tile calculator that supports custom shapes.

What waste factor should I use for a simple rectangular room?

For a basic layout with few cuts, 5–10% is usually enough. Use 10% as a safe default.

    Does the cost include installation?

No, the cost per square foot is for the flooring material only. Installation, underlayment, and taxes are separate.

Can I use this calculator for other types of flooring like tile or hardwood?

Yes, the same formula applies to any flooring material sold by the square foot. Just adjust the waste factor based on the material and pattern.
