    How It Is Calculated

The roofing calculator estimates the total roof area, the number of shingle bundles needed, and the material cost for a simple gable roof. The calculations rely on the roof's dimensions, pitch, waste factor, and shingle coverage.

    Roof Area

The roof area accounts for the slope of the roof. The pitch is the rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run. The slope factor is derived from the pitch:

    Slope Factor = √(144 + P²) / 12

where P is the roof pitch (e.g., 6 for a 6/12 pitch). The total roof area in square feet is then:

    Roof Area (sq ft) = L × W × Slope Factor

where L is the roof length (ridge length) and W is the roof width (horizontal distance from eave to ridge).

    Roof Area in Squares

In roofing, a "square" equals 100 square feet. The roof area in squares is:

Roof Area (squares) = Roof Area (sq ft) / 100

    Bundles Needed

To account for waste (cutting, overlap, and errors), the waste factor F (as a percentage) is applied. The adjusted area is divided by the coverage per bundle C (in sq ft):

    Bundles Needed = ⌈ Roof Area (sq ft) × (1 + F / 100) / C ⌉

The result is rounded up to the nearest whole bundle because partial bundles cannot be purchased.

    Material Cost

The total material cost is the number of bundles multiplied by the cost per bundle M (in dollars):

    Material Cost ($) = Bundles Needed × M

    Assumptions

    Worked Example

Suppose you have a roof with the following inputs:

Step 1: Calculate the slope factor.

    Slope Factor = √(144 + 6²) / 12 = √(144 + 36) / 12 = √180 / 12 ≈ 13.4164 / 12 ≈ 1.11803

Step 2: Calculate the roof area in square feet.

    Roof Area = 40 × 30 × 1.11803 = 1341.64 sq ft

Step 3: Calculate the roof area in squares.

    Roof Area (squares) = 1341.64 / 100 = 13.42 squares

Step 4: Calculate the number of bundles needed.

    Adjusted area = 1341.64 × (1 + 10/100) = 1341.64 × 1.1 = 1475.80 sq ft

    Bundles needed = ⌈ 1475.80 / 33.33 ⌉ = ⌈ 44.28 ⌉ = 45 bundles

Step 5: Calculate the material cost.

    Material cost = 45 × 35 = $1575

The results are: Roof area = 1341.64 sq ft, Roof area in squares = 13.42 squares, Bundles needed = 45 bundles, Material cost = $1575.

    Practical Tips

    Questions and answers

    What is a roof square?

A roof square is a unit of area equal to 100 square feet. It is commonly used in the roofing industry to simplify material estimates and pricing.

How do I measure roof pitch?

Roof pitch is the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For example, a 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.

Why do I need to include a waste factor?

A waste factor accounts for shingles that are cut to fit edges, valleys, and ridges, as well as breakage and installation errors. It ensures you order enough material to complete the job.

Can I use this calculator for other roof types?

This calculator is designed for simple gable roofs with equal slopes. For hip roofs, mansards, or other complex shapes, you may need a more advanced calculator or professional help.
